Where there is a sea, there must be a lighthouse. Although lighthouses are nothing special, they have been attracting people for many hundreds of years, mesmerizing with their mystery and minimalism. East London in South Africa is almost the most maritime city in the country. And, of course, there is a 19-meter lighthouse with a red lantern dome on the coast of the city.
The lighthouse is located on the East coast of the city. The white tower rises above the Golf course on one side and above his Majesty the Indian ocean on the other. Hood Point lighthouse was built 55 meters high above the water level. The building was painted white, and the roof and balcony on the top floor were painted red. With this colouring, from a distance, the lighthouse resembles a local wrapped in a bright scarf on the edge of a cliff. They made a small window, resembling a keyhole on the facade under the balcony. Construction was completed in 1895. At the same time, the lighthouse began to show the ships the way. The lamp flashes four times every forty seconds. Ships see the light of a lantern 31 miles away and orient themselves where to go.
Now it is one of the most popular attractions in the city. Largely because of the place. The construction site was chosen very well. The whole ensemble looks especially epic from the ocean side. When the waves hit the lighthouse during a storm, you have to scream. The noise is so loud that you can't even hear yourself. The lighthouse is located at some distance from the rocky shore, but the spray and noise of the waves reach it. In peacetime, you even forget about the practical significance of the Hood Point lighthouse. It seems that this is just another viewing platform to enjoy the ocean alone, but the balcony does not fit a lot of people.
