The Chuvash State Art Museum is the only keeper of the cultural heritage of the Chuvash Republic in the world. It stores its immortal treasures in the walls of four spacious buildings in Cheboksary under the gaze of goddess Sekhmet, the daughter of the Egyptian god Ra. This silent guardian, created by the outstanding sculptor Vladimir Nagornov, inspires curators to search for new masterpieces.
The history of the Chuvash museum began in 1939. Then more than 1 000 works of art were shown to the public at an exhibition located in the Vvedenskiy Cathedral, the first permanent home of the art museum. During WW2, the museum's activity was suspended, but it managed to preserve its exhibits. Thus, already in 1944, the first post-war exhibition was held in the house of Bona-Talantsev. A few years later, the museum received one of the most beautiful merchant mansions of the Chuvash capital. Today, it houses expositions of Russian and foreign art. There are the famous large-scale paintings by Vasily Surikov and portraits of Valentin Serov, the works of Boris Kustodiev, Isaac Levitan, Ilya Repin, and Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. The museum's collection grew so fast that a new, more spacious building was soon needed. This is how a unique four-story building with a glass ceiling appeared in Cheboksary. Light rays of the sun or a gray cloudy sky favorably emphasize museum exhibits, adding new colors and shades to them. That's why travelers want to come back here and see something new in their favorite artwork. Columns and spiral staircases, marble, and mirrors create the atmosphere of an ancient mansion, the walls of which display the history of the unique Chuvash fine art. More than 20 000 works of great masters of painting, drawing, and sculpture, like the famous works of Aleksey Kokel, Nikita Sverchkov, and Yury Zaitsev, reveal the life and culture of the Chuvash Republic and the traditions of this wonderful nation. A permanent exhibition of contemporary art is located in a separate building, and the works of the legendary artist Moisei Spiridonov can be seen in the M.S. Spiridonov Memorial Apartment-Museum.
