The Museum of Natural Sciences (Museo de La Plata) of the Argentinean city of La Plata has vast, no, has a huge collection of exhibits. Just imagine that the museum has 3.5 million items of an archaeological, anthropological, and ethnographic nature.
To precent such an outstanding collection, it required a building of about 135 meters long. But even that was not enough to display all the exhibits in the halls of Museo de La Plata.
The museum is located in a solid building constructed in the neoclassical architectural style . In 1997, the museum was considered a national historical monument.
Museo de La Plata was opened in 1888 and is a part of the local National University. The magnificent collection of the museum tells about the history of the city and province, the fauna of the region, its nature. Besides, in the museum, there is a valuable collection of large mammals’ fossils of the Tertiary and Quaternary periods found in the region of northern Argentina.
The archaeological collection of the museum allows you to see the cultural development of North and South America from the Aceramic period to the Inca empire and arrival of Europeans.
Visit the Museo de La Plata with children. They, and you, will certainly be delighted by the restored skeletons of dinosaurs, huge shells of mollusks, fragments of prehistoric animals. Several rooms are dedicated to zoological, entomological and botanical collections.
Even though the Museo de La Plata, in general, shows items from local collections, there are exhibited very interesting artifacts related to the history of Peru and Argentina of different periods in history. You can even find a hall dedicated to Egypt, where you can admire a recreated Nubian Aksha Temple.
Each year, the museum meets about 500 000 visitors. Not only locals, but even travelers from around the world come here to learn more about the history of Latin America.
