The second-largest city and port of Oran has always been a strategically important settlement in Algeria. Currently, there are many places closed to the public. For instance, the military zone, surrounding the cape, is inaccessible for tourists or locals. But you are allowed to get into the magnificent palace located above the city.
Bey's Palace is considered a historical monument of the Ottoman Empire Epoque. It was built in the oldest area of Sidi El Houari, located between Mount Murjajo and the old port. Locals call this area the symbol of the city, and the palace "Chateau Neuf" what means a "new castle" in French. Built on the order of Muhammad Bey the Great in the 18th century, the palace attracts by its beauty and grandeur. Its spacious windows overlook the sea harbor, and tunnels lead far beyond the city.
The interior is decorated with clay stucco and wooden carved elements. All the chandeliers illuminating the palace of 5.5 hectares were made of openwork copper. In the meeting room, under the painted ceiling, there is the throne of the sultan and a fireplace. In the courtyard, you can find the room of the beloved concubine, decorated with stucco patterns on the walls, painting on the ceiling, and a beautiful garden for dates. After that, you can visit the harem, the stables of the ruler, and various utility rooms.
In 1790, an earthquake destroyed Oran. Fortunately, the palace was not damaged. And in 1792, when the Spanish colonialists left these lands according to the peace treaty between King Charles IV and the Bay of Algeria, Mohammed El-Kebir, Bey moved here. So, this palace got a new life and a new name, Bey's Palace.
