Thanks to the alluring brightness of posters by tourist agencies even those of us who never left the borders of their cities know for sure where the Colosseum and the Eiffel Tower are located, that you can take a red double-decker bus in England, and mount an elephant in Thailand, that the most delicious pizza is in Naples, and duck meal – in Beijing. When planning your winter holidays, you imagine snow-white Alpine slopes, and if you are lucky to get a holiday in summer, all your thoughts are centered on the warm waters of the ocean and kilometers of golden sand beaches. You can purchase a ticket to Ibiza if you feel like dancing till dawn or to Karlovy Vary if it is time to put the world «on pause». And sometimes, while flipping through tourist guides, you dream of a faraway country that can surprise you not with the world-known sights but something of its own, something unconventional and one-of-a-kind.

Such rare and lovely jewels of India include a tiny natural spot under a fairytale-like name of Sahastradhara meaning «thousand of springs». This amazing picturesque spot is located in the vicinity of Dehradun. From time immemorial it is a favorite recreation place for the locals who do their best not to disclose it to tourists and preserve such priceless natural treasure.

Numerous stupendous waterfalls 10 meters high look especially enchanting during the time of monsoon rains. The most popular waterfall is Shikhar that is almost buried in lush verdure. Thousands of singing birds live here, and their songs are heard all over Sahastradhara. The atmosphere of harmony and comfort reigns at its bottom where mysterious cave mazes take their origin. The inner adornments of the Indian caves are very different from everything that European tourists are used to seeing in similar mazes. Inside each of them, there are local temples. The most famous of them is the shrine of Shiva. It isn’t by chance that Sahastradhara got its name, as even in our day there are thousands of hot sulfur springs whose healing water can not only rejuvenate your mind and soul but the body as well.
