The cultural village of Pampang (Desa Budaya Pampang), which is 15 km far from the city of Samarinda, is an opportunity to come over to the Dayak's place and learn the lifestyle of the indigenous people of Kalimantan. If there is no full sense of immersion in the local culture in the cities of this island, you can just take a step aside. The ethnographical park is exactly the best way to travel deep into history.
A trip to Pampang is ideal for those who seek to know and see more primordial traditions in a relatively short time, through dances, costumes, holidays, mode of life, style of communication of locals.
Special ethnographic performances are regularly held here. Only 2 hours can provide guests with something that in other cities they would find out for weeks, bit by bit. You can come to the village any day, but the shows are held only on Sundays. When going to Pampang, you should keep in mind that there are plenty of visitors on weekends. It starts at 14.00, but it’s better to come earlier: the auditorium is always full, many people take places with the best view in advance. The front row will do!
The show comprises 10 compositions performed by dancers in colorful costumes. It’s quite possible that you’d be invited to the stage – there is a chance to learn simple technics of local dances.
The play takes place in a big house which used to be an ordinary dwelling of the Dayak. Traditionally tens of families could live under the same roof.
After watching colorful and emotional shows, you can take photos (for a fee) with dances or representatives of the Dayak. Besides, they allow borrowing their outfits to make you feel the Dayak yourself.
In addition to the dance performance, there is a traditional-style market in the village where you can pick up unusual souvenirs made by the Dayaks. As in many small markets, it is right to bargain.
