At the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, castles were massively destroyed in Japan. They were supposed to be relics of the past which have no place in the bright future. Only several old buildings were preserved to our time. Some of them have survived to the present day in the authentic form, others were restored bit by bit based on paintings, drawings and writings from old books. Hamamatsu Castle is exactly the castle that was restored from ruins.

It was built in 1570. Almost immediately it became an economic and military center of the region. The military nobility lived there during the whole Edo period: the castle was chosen as a residence of ruling clans.

However, when the political situation in the country changed, the castle started to fall into disrepair. Its restoration started only in the second part of the 20th century. The castle ruins were so beautiful and their historical value was so big, that it was impossible to leave the castle in a destroyed state.

As a result, the great historical object appeared in Hamamatsu. It was restored in accordance with the old techniques and fully repeated its initial appearance. Today, there is a beautiful park on the territory of the castle. There are cherry trees, willows and an incredible number of different colors that make the place fabulous at any time of the year.

The main tower of the castle, Tenshu, houses a historical museum. In the basement of the castle, there is an ancient well that used to be a source of drinking water for all residents of this complex. On the first floor, there is an exhibition with centuries-old paintings. On the second floor, there is an exposition of armor from the time of the Edo period. On the third floor, you can find a layout of the reconstructed complex of the castle and the city near it. On the fourth floor, which is the highest floor of the castle, there is an amazing viewing platform which offers the view not only of the whole city of Hamamatsu but also of famous Mount Fuji, if the weather is favorable.
