Since the middle of the last century, the Roppongi district has acquired a scandalous reputation as the most partying area of Tokyo. Although it remains synonymous with club life, a lot has changed since then. On the one hand, Roppongi remains the most cosmopolitan place in Japan, attracting travelers from all over the world. Today, it is a credit not only to the vibrant nightlife but also to the numerous foreign consulates who have chosen the territory of the district for their headquarters. On the other hand, Roppongi has become an expensive and prestigious area of Tokyo. Its modern skyscrapers house exclusive boutiques, first-class restaurants, offices of large international companies, and elite art galleries. At the same time, there are many quiet parks and backstreets where you can rest in the district.
Slowly but surely, the Roppongi district is becoming the center of the modern cultural life of the city and the country. There are several impressive exhibition spaces on the block that form the «Art Triangle Roppongi». The first «corner» of this figure is the National Art Center – a large and young art museum. It is located in a unique undulating building designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa. The center does not have a permanent exhibition but holds interesting temporary exhibitions. The second «corner» is the Suntory Museum of Art, which occupies the architectural complex called Tokyo Midtown by Kengo Kuma. Its collection includes about 3000 exhibits: paintings, objects made of clay, varnish, and textiles. Some of them belong to the cultural heritage and national treasures of the country. The third «corner» is the Mori Art Museum, located on the 53d floor of the multifunctional skyscraper Roppongi Hills Mori Tower. It was founded by a construction magnate and philanthropist, after whom it was named. The Mori Museum specializes in contemporary Asian art and showcases paintings, sculptures, installations, and objects from the fashion world.
After a full cultural program, take a walk through the green oasis of the Roppongi district – the Mori Garden, decorated in the best traditions of Japanese landscape design.
