Murals – beautiful graffiti on the walls of houses have long adorned the streets of old European cities. And so, this beautiful trend has reached Asia.
The first murals appeared in Penang. Their author was a famous local artist born in Lithuania, Ernest Zacharevic. He painted a lot not only in Penang: his works are in Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur and even Singapore.
The city authorities of Ipoh became interested in the talented author. And they were even more attracted by the fact that Ernest's works are a kind of bait for tourists coming to the city.
So, in 2014, the Ipoh city council, together with a local coffee brand that became a sponsor of the project, began to decorate the city – create a series of street art objects under the general name «Mural Art Trail».
The walls of old houses in the city center were chosen as the main «canvases» for the talented artist. Now they are decorated with eight large and popular frescoes, not just graffiti.
The most popular drawing may be an Elderly Man with a Cup of Coffee. This was Zakharevich's first work in Ipoh. It is located next to a coffee shop where you can try the famous Ipoh white coffee.
Then there was the painting called Paper Plane. To see it, it is important to look at the roofs of houses, otherwise, you can easily miss it.
It is impossible not to notice the picture with a giant hummingbird – this bird can be seen from afar.
The graffiti called Pedicab is no longer just a painting on the wall but a real installation. It is complemented by a real part of the vehicle.
The name of the mural Kopi-O means «black coffee». Five bags of coffee, which many tourists mistake for tea, are the perfect place for creative photos.
In Ipoh, there are also graffiti telling about the formation of the city, for example, Evolution. This painting shows the mining plant that has made Ipoh one of the richest cities in Malaysia for almost 100 years in a row.
