Are you still worried about having parted with your beloved cat? Don’t worry! Firstly, this is not forever, and secondly, Kuching is full of them. Cats roam in the streets, enjoy the sun in the main squares, crawl on your lap when you sit down for lunch in an outdoor cafe. Kuching can easily compete with Istanbul in the number of cats.
And the score would definitely be in Kuching’s favor. After all, the name of the city is translated from Malaysian as «a cat». Many years ago, when the colonizers first stepped onto the shore of Kuching, they pointed to the ground and asked, «What is this?» meaning, «What is the name of this land?». A cat was lying on the ground at that moment, so the locals thought that the colonizers didn’t know what animal species was in front of them, and answered, «Kuching», a «Cat». So that's the name they gave to the new land.
Since then, cats have a special treatment in Kuching. The city even has one of the world’s largest cat museums. Inside, the history of the felines is collected, more than 5 000 years comprised in one building. In total, the museum displays more than two thousand exhibits, including real historical artifacts: photographs, documents, ancient statuettes, and weird trifling souvenirs like porcelain mugs, pillows, unusual toys. The most notable thing about the museum is its doorways. Each time, to continue the tour, you will have to go through a huge cat mouth with enormous fangs.
Needless to mention that quiet meowing and purring is an on-loop soundtrack here. Also, you can get acquainted with different stories related to cats, as well as superstitions. If a black cat crosses your path in the museum, it means that you haven’t seen everything yet and you need to take one more round.
The museum is fascinating and informative, but it is useless to go into its entertainment advantages because everyone loves cats.
