Some people can’t be satisfied with a simple trip to another country. They need a real adventure to test themselves in some way or another: run a marathon, creep into a cave, climb one of the highest mountains in Malaysia. Let’s be honest: even the locals love setting the ascent of Gunung Angsi as their goal. To joyfully overcome kilometers of dense forests on the way up in whatever weather – what can be better?
The mountain is located very close to Seremban, so it can be a pretty good weekend trip. Take comfortable shoes, water, a mosquito repellent, and off you go – the journey begins.
After about a half an hour drive from Seremban, you will arrive at a well-equipped parking lot. It may look misleading because there, in the forest, everything is arranged so sedately, even stone stairs are seen everywhere. However, perish the thought. In the first few meters of your climb, the delusion will disappear, almost together with the stone stairs: only a wooden one will be left.
The path will then go up rather steeply. Get ready to get your muscles toughened. While walking, you will be surrounded by a dense Malaysian forest with plants growing above you, at your sides, and even below you. The path will be wrapped in vines.
You will have to walk over tree roots in some areas; in others, you will get over the sand, or you will climb the rocks. Yes, this is the place for Indiana Jones-spirited. Special ropes are provided in places where only experienced climbers can climb on their own.
And then, after three hours of exhausting but very exciting ascent, the peak will reveal itself before your eyes. At the top, there is a small rest area and a sign saying, «You are on top!». That is in case you have doubts about your location.
Look around and enjoy the foggy views of Seremban and nearby towns. You can even see Kuala Lumpur in clear weather. The view is impressive and well-worth all the effort and the challenges of climbing. But don’t sit there for too long because you still have an equally exciting descent.
