One of the most interesting places on the island of Sri Lanka is the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, which stores many secrets and legends in its picturesque ruins. Lots of pilgrims come there every day wishing to touch the religious shrines. Tourists strive there to learn the history of the unusual city and make amazing photos near the antiquities which age can be calculated in centuries.

Polonnaruwa is located on the bond of an artificial lake which, just like the city, was created by monks in the 3rd century. They wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and chose a remote place for that sake. They decorated and improved it year by year, created majestic temples and beautiful parks.

After some time, local rulers noticed their work and started to come there for recreation and meditations. In the 11th century, Indian people destroyed the old capital city of Anuradhapura. Lords, not willing to build temples and palaces from scratch, decided to transfer the capital from the conquered ruins to a luxurious monastery complex.

Thus, beginning from the 12th century, the «golden age» started in Polonnaruwa. Rich residents and famous craftsmen came there, monks continued to implement their educational and cultural activities. The city was expanding: gardens, parks, tall buildings – palaces, meeting halls and gem vaults – were appearing there.

Unfortunately, in the 13th century, the capital started to decline due to the building of Angkor Wat, which eclipsed Polonnaruwa (once the most beautiful city) by its beauty and wealth. Gradually, all the residents abandoned the city, and buildings were seized by the natural forces.

Today, Polonnaruwa is one of the biggest and probably the most famous archeological park in Sri Lanka. It amazes with its majesty and magnitude. When you see these ancient buildings, you cannot understand – what strength, patience, persistence and tools of labor were possessed by the monks who created this incredible beauty...
