The Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the statue of Zeus and the Temple of Artemis… Even those who are not familiar with the history and culture of the ancient world can easily continue the list. The seven wonders of the world haunt historians and archaeologists, who don’t cease to work in search of the exact location since ancient times. Not all residents of Bodrum, where ruins of Halicarnassus are located, know about the ancient stone mausoleum. A series of devastating earthquakes destroyed the ancient wonder of the world in the 15th century. However, many stone fragments of the ancient mausoleum formed the basis of the wall construction of the medieval St. Peter's Castle, which still can be enjoyed today. Nowadays only the foundation can be seen on the site of the mausoleum. Statues and bas-reliefs of Greeks and Amazons battle scenes are located in the halls of the British Museum. However, the ruins of the famous mausoleum are not the only miracle of antiquity, which attracts tourists to the ancient city of Halicarnassus like a magnet. The city founded by the ancient Greeks in the 8th century BC has preserved many monuments of the past. The most preserved one is the St. Peter's Castle, built on the territory of the ancient palace of the Persian rulers by the Greek knights from the island of Rhodes in 1404. Later, the Spanish knights gave the castle a Gothic look. A hundred years later Sultan Suleiman marked the lands as his territory and transformed the high stone chapel into a Muslim mosque. Nowadays, on the territory of the powerful medieval fortress, there is the Museum of Underwater Archeology. It has a model of the famous Phoenician ship that sank in the coastal waters in the 14th century.
