The northern coast of the Aegean Sea can be definitely called a huge open-air museum. All the ancient cities were located here. Besides, it was the birthplace of the ancient history of modern Turkey. Ephesus, Didim, and Priene have preserved many ancient monuments of architecture, but the gem of the period was the city of Miletus with its trade seaport and fertile lands. The prosperity of agriculture and winemaking in Miletus contributed to many cults of pagan gods and mythical nymphs, as evidenced by the stone remains of ancient temples. According to historical research, the first settlers appeared on the territory of Miletus approximately in the 4th millennium BC, but the earliest finds of fragments of Mycenaean ceramics from archaeological excavations, which have been conducted since the 19th century, date back to the 14th century BC. Due to the work of the German archaeologist Theodor Wiegand, it is now possible to imagine the scale of the ancient settlement, the center of which was the three antique squares called agoras. In the northern square, the ruins of the sanctuary of Apollo Delphinius and the ancient bouleuterion for council meetings can be seen. In the west square, there are the ruins of the ancient temple of the goddess Athena and several Roman thermal baths, named after Faustina, the wife of the famous Marcus Aurelius. The main sight of the ancient city is the Roman theatre built on the ruins of an ancient Greek theatre and designed for 25 thousand spectators. The well-preserved monument of ancient architecture is a huge amphitheater with many secret passages and tunnels, through which noble dignitaries went to the honorable upper places. What is more, the Archaeological Museum, located on the territory of Miletus, has all the valuable exhibits discovered during excavations, such as fragments of ceramics and tools, jewelry, and old coins. Despite the fact that the neighboring ancient city of Didim was much richer, the inhabitants of Miletus were considered the luckiest and happiest people on earth.
