Why is New Zealand so popular among tourists? There are no gorgeous buildings, important in historic places, ultramodern museums, and galleries, snow-white sandy beaches with azure waves ... In the country of rivers and lakes, mountains and forests people come to dip to the world undamaged by the civilization but complemented and closely intertwined with it. The dams of the Korokoro River in Belmont Regional Park – is great evidence of it.

Walking along the forest paths of Belmont Park, you can find two small "waterfalls". You even would not think about the fact that one of them supplied the city, and the other – the wool factory with water. The dams suit the entire landscape with centuries-old trees, ferns, mosses, and flowers. The streams of mountain water smoothly flow from the wooden steps, decorated with the stones on the bottom of the river. Close to them, you see the crystal-clear pond with a fish in it. It is hard to imagine that this was created by a man, and not nature.

On one river there are constructed two dams. Korokoro Dam, built in 1903, is made to satisfy household, sanitary and firefighting needs of the population. And lower is installed the dam of the Wellington Wool Company. It was made a year later, in 1904 for the water supply of the factory and the mills' work.

Korokoro Dams are rather small. The height of the main dam of the river is 8 meters, and the former mill dam – 6 meters. Each of them is provided with an uncontrolled spillway, that is why the “capacity level” is always different. Besides, the Korokoro dam has a curve and stepped shape, it adds more similarity with natural waterfalls to it.

The constructions have historical value. Designed by an engineer Samuel Jekyll, they became the earliest massive concrete dams in New Zealand. Their installation meant a lot in the technology of the dams’ construction.

You can come to the dams by the forest path. It is small and comfortable, so you do not need to wear any special shoes. And the impressive decorations of trees, ferns, and flowers make the route even more attractive for walking. Close to the path, a little higher, there is a special track for running. If you like outdoor activities, then running in the morning in such a picturesque place is definitely for you.
