Household items and cultural objects of peoples of ancient civilizations are found in all museums of the world. They are even where the ancestors of modern Indians have never set foot. But some of the largest collections, of course, are located in the homeland of ancient tribes. Such a place with the largest collection of Mayan artifacts is the Popol Vuh Museum. It is located in the capital of Guatemala. An extensive collection of pre-Columbian and colonial objects of culture and art found its permanent home at the  Francisco Marroquín University in 1977.

The museum was named after the most valuable book of the Maya civilization, Popol Vuh, which means "Book of Counsel", or "Book of People". It was written in the period after the Spanish conquest of Guatemala. It tells the story of Maya mythology and the history of the Quiche tribe. Representatives of this particular tribe previously inhabited the territory of the modern city of Guatemala. Until 1550, these stories were passed down by word of mouth, from generation to generation. And only at the beginning of the 18th century the Dominican monk Francisco Ximénez translated and recorded all the stories in Spanish. Thanks to him, the world has learned a lot about the life and culture of these amazing people. Today, the pages of this book are kept in various museums around the world.

The Popol Vuh Museum building is an excellent example of a combination of two styles: geometric architecture, typical of all the Mayan pyramids, and the Renaissance, typical of buildings from the time of Spanish colonization.

The museum’s collection includes more than 400 valuable exhibits arranged in chronological order of its halls. It starts from the Paleo-Indian period, dating back to 15-9 millennia BC. The oldest item is the clovis point stone tool found in Guatemala. Other exhibits include archaic period pottery, Olmec religious jade products, and colorful pottery with hieroglyphs found at the site of the ancient city of Teotihuacan.
