Choloma: a city of contrasts

Archeology, Civilization history

Choloma is located in a mountain valley bestrewed with tropical forests and morning and evening fogs. The third-largest city in Honduras attracts tourists not for its famous attractions, but for its unique atmosphere that cherishes the memory of pre-Hispanic and colonial times. Small colorful houses, narrow streets, dozens of tiny shops littered with curios and antique goods. Choloma has the charm of a hidden city in which time has stopped. You can get to know it in just one day without missing anything important.

The first thing that attracts tourists to the city is the air, which is completely different from what we are used to breathing. Mountain, marine, and pine scents are mixed into an amazing smell that fills all the space around. It literally and figuratively makes you dizzy.

There, not only the air is unique but also the buildings. Colored houses are adjacent to stone buildings in the colonial style, creating a unique architectural rhythm. Cobblestone streets abruptly turn into paths of gravel or sand, elaborate stucco into hand-painted walls, and tiles into thatched roofs... This place shows the history of Honduras and its inhabitants pretty well.

In the 19th century, banana and sugar plantations were opened near the city and most of the villagers worked in the fields. Now the plantations are abandoned. However, locals have not gotten rid of some habits: wicker baskets and hats made of reeds, sculptures, and various banana cakes are still sold in the narrow streets and market squares.  Besides, you can find cheap spices, fruits, and vegetables in the markets.

We recommend spending the rest of the day climbing to the top of the hill. There is a convenient observation deck. The hill offers an amazing view of the city lying in the rays of the setting sun on one side, and the picturesque port of the neighboring village on another.
