The largest Honduran island, Isla El Tigre, is compassed by the haze of the Pacific ocean. Unfortunately, despite the name, there are no tigers on the island. However, there is a larger attraction, a volcano that rises in the heart of Isla el Tigre.

Do not be afraid of the eruption. It has been dormant for many centuries ago, so it is not dangerous for residents or tourists. Also, you will be surprised by the black beaches which contrast with the usual white shores of the islands in the Gulf of Honduras, as well as by the color of the ocean that gets darker because of the black sands. Another discovery will be the temperature of the "beach cover", though it is not very pleasant. Dark sand heats up much faster than the normal one, so it is impossible to step on it at noon. However, you will be pleased by the absence of people on the beach. The island is not the most popular tourist destination. There are not so many parks, hotels, restaurants, and equipped places for recreation. There aren't even ATMs here, so don't forget to bring cash.

The island used to be prosperous. The village of Amapala was the only official port of Honduras on the Pacific coast. However, it was moved to Henecan in the last century. Since people lost their jobs, many families had to leave their homeland.

Today, Amapala is struggling to become a tourist center. They have already restored the local Catholic church and now they are repairing buildings, cleaning and renovating parks, building new restaurants and hotels.

Moreover, it is worth getting an eyeful of the entire island: mountain streams, waterfalls, rare tropical plants, and animals. There are several ways to move around the island. For example, you can take a "motorcycle taxi" or rent a pickup truck to climb the mountains and enjoy the island's scenery. The easiest option is to go on foot. The walk will take about four hours. A paved path around the island will make it safe and comfortable.

After exploring the local attractions, visit Playa del Burro. There are the best restaurants in the city where you can try local food.
