The city of Tegucigalpa is located in the mountain valley of the Choluteca River. Fanned by mountain winds and fogs, the capital of Honduras keeps the rich history of the country on its streets, squares, temples, stately buildings, and houses on the outskirts. No place in the state can tell you more about the past, from the Maya civilization to the present day, than the heart of Tegucigalpa. The Museum for National Identity is a mirror of the peoples living in these lands since ancient times.

The building of the museum is of historical value. Built in the early 18th century and preserved to this day, it has become the brightest monument of colonial architecture. The Museum for National Identity (Museo para la Identidad Nacional) is considered one of the most visited in the whole country. The halls feature exhibits devoted to both the history and the culture of Honduras. Art galleries display paintings, sculptures, and other art objects created by local artists. Periodically, the exhibition is filled with works by artists from other countries.

The next ensemble of halls is dedicated to the history of the country from the settlement of the first people to the present day. The history is more than 3 thousand years old. The gallery displays household items of ancient tribes: stone tools, weapons for hunting, jewelry, dishes, toys, combs, embroidery, weaving, and much more. Each of the items keeps the memory of ancient times. The times before the European foot entered the continent and turned the world of indigenous tribes upside down, forever changing the appearance of these places.

Of particular interest are the bas-reliefs created by the Mayans to decorate the temples. It was possible to preserve some of the artifacts used by the priests during the rites. The famous clock and calendar, or rather their miniature copy, are also displayed in the museum. They smoothly turn into artifacts representing life in later centuries: photos from the personal archives of locals, tools of craftsmen, porcelain dishes, traditional embroidery, and clothing of the colonial era.
