The main economic sector of Andorra is tourism. It annually replenishes the state treasury and glorifies the small principality to the whole world. However, along with tourism, there is still another economic sector of the country, the manufacturing of tobacco products. To understand the importance of tobacco production, and to get acquainted with all its stages, it is worth visiting the Tobacco Museum in the resort town in the south of the country, Sant Julia de Loria.
The Tobacco Museum is located in a four-story building of the old Reig tobacco factory, which was specially restored to meet its needs. The legendary factory had been in continuous operation since 1909, under the name of Cal Rafelo, until it closed its doors in 1957. Today, it houses a stunning interactive museum where you can follow the evolution of this industry in Andorra, see all the key points of technical modernization, as well as learn the history of tobacco.
Thanks to a modern multimedia system that guides visitors with female and male voices and audio-visual information projections, a visit to the museum is not only educational but also enjoyable. Its entire space is divided into four parts. In the first pavilion, which occupies almost the entire first floor of the factory, you can learn about the preparation of tobacco leaves from their purchase at the plantation to the important process of flavoring and fermentation. After all, the taste of the final product depends on the quality of the selected flavors. In the same hall, visitors are told about the origin of the plant and the methods of its cultivation. The second pavilion is also located on the first floor. You can found out everything about the preparation of tobacco: grinding, blowing, and roasting. On the second floor, there is a third pavilion, which demonstrates the production of tobacco products: cigars and cigarettes. Finally, the fourth hall of the museum introduces visitors to the history of tobacco in Andorra and around the world.
