You can travel all over the world and see thousands of temples, but in any place, you will ask yourself one question: "Which one is the best?". In the small European Principality of Andorra, there are two of the best temples at once, the Church of Santa Coloma and the Church of Sant Vicenc d'Enclar. The oldest temples in the state are not only similar in appearance, like two twins. They are also located close to the same city, Santa Coloma. It is worth visiting both, but it is better to start with the Church of Sant Vicenc d'Enclar, as it is not just a church but part of a defensive complex of the Visigoth Period. Besides the temple building, it included walls, a defensive tower, several residential buildings, and utility rooms for storing wheat and wine, as well as an old cemetery.
It is difficult to determine the exact date of its construction. According to most historians, the church was built about the 8th-9th centuries and was open until 1852. Placed on the top of a hill, at an altitude of 1126 meters, it was not only a religious building but also the first residence of local counts.
Its architecture corresponds to the typical buildings of Catalonia and Languedoc of the 9th-10th centuries. It is a rectangular structure with a square apse and a round side bell tower, which consists of several floors, narrow high windows at the bottom, and small round loopholes under the roof. This indicates the defensive function of the bell tower and the church as a whole. One of the walls still keeps a perfectly preserved Moorish arch. It is believed to be an entrance since there were no other hatches in the building. The floor is paved with granite stones and limestone.
The ruins of the building, which was replaced by the Church of Sant Vicenc d'Enclar, can be clearly seen in some places of the temple. Besides, over its long history, the church itself has been rebuilt several times. Several years ago, the church was restored. So now you can see its initial appearance.
