Rettenwand Cave in Kapfenberg

Unusual places

The Alps are literally dotted with grottos and caves: some are deep, some aren’t, some have large halls, narrow crawlways, whole kilometres of mysterious labyrinths, underwater rivers and lakes, some are open to the public, and others remain a mystery even to speleologists. The picturesque lands of Styria are especially rich with caves, a real cave museum in the vicinity of Kapfenberg being the highlight.

And despite the allure of contemporary art gallery halls and Oberkapfenberg Castle halls, of knight tournaments and falconry shows, one shouldn’t exclude Rettenward Cave, one of the most important and popular attractions of Kapfenberg, from their itinerary.

This miracle of nature or as tourists call it “the heart of the magical kingdom” is located only a few kilometres from the city. This place is really full of magic and sorcery. For thousands of long years, the underground waters were whittling down the mountain stocks, and winds were guiding their flow. Stalagmites and stalactites’ shapes were becoming more whimsical and more reminiscent of mythical creatures.

Today, tourists from all over the world travel to look at the result of the collaboration of nature and magic. However, it’s only possible to get inside as part of a group tour. Ancient myths and legends told by experienced guides will breathe life into rocks, and your imagination will be able to picture whole scenes with legendary heroes in them. The journey to the fantastical world starts in a hall called the Great Cathedral. This name isn’t accidental. The acoustics here are so amazing that when wind swooshes past rocks it makes a ringing bell-like sound.

The next stop after the “cathedral” is the Hall of Destruction with an underground stone lake. Its floor is studded with stalagmites that look like pearls under clear water. All halls and passageways of the cave are equipped with modern lighting that plays its part in the performance. It helps visitors see an incredible light and shadow spectacle.
