One of the oldest cities of Belarus, Zaslawye, was founded by Vladimir the Great, the baptist of Russia, and was named after his elder son – Izyaslav. In the 11th century, it was the residence of Zaslawye dukes, the successors of Izyaslav. The center of their principality was the place where the main city attraction, the Savior Transfiguration Church, stands now.

However, it became an Orthodox church much later. Before that, the local shrine had many other names and belonged to different religious communities of the city. It was built in 1577 on the territory of the Zaslawye castle. During that time, the city was ruled by the representatives of the Hlebowicz family, who patronized the Calvinist community. They were those who laid the first stone of the Calvinist church. However, city residents remained faithful to Orthodoxy and did not become parishioners of this church. The next generation of the Hlebowiczs were Catholics, and soon the Calvinist church was rebuilt as a Catholic one named after Archangel Michael. A 35 meters high bell tower appeared at the same time. During that period, Catholicism was spreading across the whole of Belarus. In 1596, as a result of the signing of the church union, a new religious movement, Uniatism, appeared. In 1833, the church was transferred to the new church community and converted into the Savior Transfiguration Uniate Church. The Uniate movement did not exist for long: it was annexed to Orthodoxy in 1839. The Savior Transfiguration Church became an Orthodox cathedral and was headed by the former Uniate priest – Ignatius Zdanovich. In 1876, a mass conversion of Zaslawye Catholics to the Orthodox faith started thanks to the efforts of the next abbot of the church – Father Gregory. At the same time, the temple bells were cast, and the church land borders were enlarged significantly.

During the Great Patriotic War (World War II), services were suspended, and an ammunition depot was placed in the building. During these years, the temple was seriously damaged due to numerous attacks. Later it was even closed as a result of the anti-religious persecutions of the 1960s. Services were resumed there only in the 1990s. The Savior Transfiguration Church got the status of a cathedral in 2014.
