Are there any other people in the world who love French fries more than Americans? Probably there are no such people, except for Eddy Van Belle who opened a museum dedicated to that simple potato dish in the historical center of Bruges.
In 2008, the Fries Museum opened its doors to people from all over the world: to those, who wanted to learn about a ten thousand years history of the root vegetable. The first part of the exhibition tells about when people started to grow potato tubers, from where and who brought this crop to Europe, and how breeders cultivated numerous varieties of potatoes.
Various machines for collecting and sorting potatoes are displayed for visitors. Funny illustrations of the main museum character, accompanied by interesting facts, watch you from the walls.
After you got acquainted with the history, it is time to go to the second part of the exhibition: to the section dedicated to one of the main and undoubtedly the most famous potato dish – French fries. In this exhibition hall, you can learn the fascinating history of the name of the dish (have you ever thought why fries are called French fries if they originated in Belgium?) and secrets of the perfect cooking of this dish.
Advertisement posters of different times, tools for cutting, specific vintage fryers – all these items are shown in the museum. However, don't go to the museum when you're hungry! The smell of freshly cooked French fries, which everyone remembers from their childhood, will definitely catch you! In case if you get hungry, you can try homemade French fries served in the museum for free. And in the basement café, you can take a rest after a walk in the museum, eat another portion and buy souvenirs.
The museum is located in the city center, in a building made in the Gothic style in 1399. St. Walburga's Church, Jan Van Eyck square, and the historical center of Bruges in all its glory are located within a walking distance.
