The Fries Museum is the only museum of its kind. It is located in the center of Bruges, in an old Gothic building constructed in 1399. The museum was founded in 2006 by a Belgian entrepreneur, Eddy Van Belle. He was also the founder of the Chocolate Museum and the Lamp Museum.

This place will be interesting for both adults and children. The museum tells visitors about the cultivation history of potatoes as an agricultural crop. You will be told where the potato first appeared and how it spread across Europe.

This exposition, dedicated to growing the vegetable, demonstrates all the stages of this process: from seeding to harvesting. You can also see machines that are needed for the process. The total number of museum exhibits is 400, including ancient items that have been preserved since the pre-Columbian era. The tour is organized in Dutch and English.

An exhibition of the second part of the museum is dedicated to the dish of French fries itself. The dish is loved by many people in the world. Belgians share secrets of how to cook the branded potato fries which are considered their national dish and which attract tourists to their country.

Belgians prefer to chop that vegetable coarsely in order to make its crust crispy and potato soft and airy inside. Potatoes are fried two times in beef fat, not in vegetable oil.

Just walking in Bruges or Brussels, without visiting this museum, tourists can buy takeaway French fries with different sauces and of various taste combinations.

This dish has become, so to say, a brand of Belgium, alongside waffles and chocolate. If you are on the go and got hungry, this dish is perfect. You can eat it without losing time in restaurants.

After watching the expositions tourists are suggested to try the ready product in the museum café. The museum exposition is small, so it will not take lots of time.

There are other Bruges attractions nearby: Jan Van Eyck Square, the Chocolate Museum, and the Opera House.
