The oldest family brewery in Bruges named "Half Moon" (De Halve Maan) is a favorite place among locals and tourists.
This place provides both informative and pleasant time: they can learn the history of Belgian beer brewing and, of course, try the branded beverage.
The Half Moon is the only functioning brewery in Bruges which accepts tourist groups and organizes excursions. Apart from the beer museum, there are also 5 restaurant halls and an observation deck which offers a picturesque view of the whole city.
Nowadays, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Bruges which is especially appreciated by men. The history of this brewery started in 1856, when its owner, Henri I, decided to open a new modern brewery in the city.
Branded beer named "Brugse Zot" (which means "Bruges jester" or "a fool from Bruges") became the brewery calling card. This type of beer was made of malt, hops, and yeast with the usage of top fermentation technology. Even though it had strong sediment, sour taste, and short shelf life, it became famous within a short period of time. The famous beer with a rich foam and fruity fragrance is still produced there.
After Henri's death, his business was inherited by his sons. They had managed the family business until they transferred it to their wives. The brewery was rapidly developing and expanding its production thanks to studying the experience of other countries and the introduction of modern technologies.
Bock, a Belgian lager, became a very popular type of beer in the city after the First World War. Today, the sixth generation of the Mays family works hard on creating natural and authentic lagers in Bruges. The recipes they use are old.
In the 1930s, brewers started to pour the drink not only into barrels but also into glass bottles. At the same time, a home delivery service of beer appeared. At the end of the 80s, the brewery stopped its work, but the legendary brewery reopened its doors in 2005.
Not far from the Half Moon, there are other city attractions: Walplein Square, the Horse Head Fountain, and the Diamond Museum.
