The Grand Place is one of the main attractions in Belgium, Brussels. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful squares in the world. It was built in the strict Gothic architectural style and catches the imagination with its luxury and pomp. The facades of houses are adorned with openwork carvings, gilded sculptures, and majestic columns.

Visiting the square is a part of the obligatory observation tour of the capital of Belgium. During Christmas huge decorated spruce is settled there, celebration fairs and festivals are held and an exhibition dedicated to Christmas is organized. At that time, buildings are illuminated by colorful lights, so the atmosphere of this place becomes even more fairy-tale.

The square attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world. Its size is not big: it is just 110 meters long and 68 meters wide. But this is exactly what makes it even more chamber and cozy. You can delightedly peer into every tower and sculpture for hours, and discover something new every time you come there.

There used to be a swamp on the site of today's square. Later it was drained and built up with the first Bread House (the 13th century), which has been preserved to our time and currently is the king’s residence.

The initial name of the square was Grote Markt (Market Square). It was the place with noisy shopping malls, where the clatter of hooves and the continuous hum of the crowd were heard, justice was administered, and jousting tournaments were held.

The first building of the City Hall appeared in the 15th century after it had been built for 50 years! This unique construction even survived the bombardment of Brussels by the French army in 1695, when the whole city center was destroyed. It has been perfectly preserved to our time.

After the war, the square was restored within a short period of time thanks to rich trade guilds. It was restored according to a well-thought-out plan and gained its modern appearance.

The best time for taking photos in the square is the daytime, when the sun is at its zenith and buildings do not cast shadows.
