Victor Hugo, the world-known French writer, once admitted that he never saw anything more majestic and strict at the same time, than the ancient monumental Palace of the Prince-Bishops in the Belgian city of Liege. This palace on a huge old square of Saint-Lambert is considered the main attraction of the city. It annually attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists. Today, the great Belgian architectural monument is the only building on the square. But long ago the palace stood opposite the main shrine of the city, the Saint-Lambert Cathedral. By the way, the city square was named after it. Since the very first day of the palace foundation at the beginning of the 10th century, the building has belonged to the Liege eparchy and served as an official residence of Liege bishops. However, the modern building is the third Palace of Prince-Bishops. The first palace was destroyed by a severe fire at the end of the 12th century. The second was robbed by the Burgundians and burned down at the beginning of the 16th century. Only the third one, designed by the famous architect, Arnold van Mulken, and built from 1526 to the end of the 16th century, was preserved and became a true symbol of modern Liege. Splendid facades of the palace were made in the Gothic style, and the large yard was surrounded by spacious galleries with high arches and 60 unique columns adorned with carved capitals of the Renaissance.

Currently, it is open for visiting. The inner yard is open for the public only several days a year. In the building, there is the Palace of Justice of Liege. Over the eight centuries, the palace has been expanded and rebuilt, and the interior has also undergone several changes. Today, the palace displays original interiors ranging from the 16th century to the reign of King Louis XVI: luxurious Brussels tapestries, colorful wallpapers, and antique tiled stoves.
