The history of the main shrine of Liege, the cathedral and the residence of the Liege bishop, started in the Early Middle Ages. In the middle of the 10th century, a small church, Saint-Germain Chapel, was founded on the place of the majestic modern cathedral. The number of its parishioners was increasing so dramatically, that another village church, Saint-Calixte, was needed very soon. It was founded not far from the first chapel on the territory of the Chevremont fortress. Unfortunately, at the end of the 10th century, the fortress was destroyed, as well as the old chapels. The history of one of the seven collegiate churches of Liege, the future cathedral of Liege, started from this sad event.

The construction of the majestic Gothic architectural monument lasted many years. This affected the exterior of the cathedral: it was made with elements of different styles that were characteristic of this or that period. Due to numerous floods of the 14th-17th centuries and the French Revolution of the 18th century, the major part of the medieval relics of the church and rare books of the church library was damaged. However, you can still see many original pieces of art there.

The interior of the cathedral is worth special attention. Light airy interiors are made in the style of Mosan Gothic. The combination of the Meuse blue stones and Tuffeau pale yellow stones from Maastricht makes the ancient temple look modern and elegant. The high arches are adorned with elegant rinceaux which has been known since the time of Ancient Rome and which was especially popular during the Renaissance period.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the collegiate church got the honorary status of a cathedral. Besides, the main relics of St. Lambert's Cathedral and the old pipe pianos from St. Paul’s Church, as well as relics of saints, were transferred there. The relics of saints have been preserved in St. Paul's Cathedral up to today. Besides, St. Paul's Cathedral still keeps the works of the famous 16th-19th centuries painters. The exposition of their works is placed in eight spacious halls.
