The once-turbulent flow of the Bulgarian Struma River has made its way between the fabulously picturesque Pirin and Maleshevo mountains. Today, the deep river valley more than 16 kilometers long is called Kresna Gorge and is one of the main natural attractions in Bulgaria.
This delightful creation of nature starts in the town of Kresna, hence its name. The mild Mediterranean climate has made the gorge famous as an ideal place for families with children. Even in the coldest winter months, the temperature here rarely drops below 2-4°C. In summer, it does not exceed 25°C. A light cool breeze blows on travelers, and the shadow of the high rocky mountains shelters them from the rays of the scorching southern sun.
Kresna Gorge is especially popular among fans of extreme sports and tourism. This place often attracts groups of brave rock climbers. In summer, when the Struma is at its deepest, lovers of rafting and canyoning come here to sail down the river.
Along the wonderful river gorge, there are many surrounding villages and towns. Most of them offer weary travelers the services of balneological resorts and popular spa centers. Besides, there is the legendary Samuil's Fortress not far from the town of Petrich, as well as the burial spot of the world-famous fortune teller Vanga in the small village of Rupite, next to the Church of St. Petka of Bulgaria.
Those who prefer natural to man-made monuments will certainly like Tisata Nature Reserve, known for the largest thickets of high juniper in Bulgaria. By the way, there are many plants and animals included in the Red List around the gorge.
Tourists can go on a trip to Kresna Gorge on their own. The main thing is to wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen and a bucket hat. And to go rafting on the Struma River, it is best to contact the professionals at one of the sports clubs located in the town of Kresna.
