Melnik Pyramids

No matter how talented people are, nothing compares to the most important artist in the world, nature. Only this unsurpassed master can form the picturesque peak slopes, rushing rivers, green meadows, and valleys covered with floral carpets. Like a skilled craftsman, it creates masterpieces, one of which is the legendary rock pyramids in the vicinity of Melnik.

The famous Melnik rocks occupy a gigantic area of 50 square kilometers. They are not named after the smallest Bulgarian town of Melnik, but after ordinary chalk, for their whiteness and fragility. In 1960, the pyramids were declared a natural tourist attraction. Every year they are visited by tens of thousands of tourists. How could it be otherwise when the stone giants amaze travelers at first sight?

These unique creations of nature change every year. Moved by the clay soil and reshaped by the wind, the rocks have become a real magnet for lovers of pristine nature. Tourists annually come here to see how nature creates its masterpiece, making bizarre figures from stones only with the help of the wind.

Actually, the Melnik rocks consist of three groups of pyramids: Melnik, Rozhen, and Karlanovo, which got their names from the nearest Bulgarian villages. The pyramids more than 100 meters high, partly covered with vegetation, resemble mushrooms, bales of hay, obelisks, mosques, and Gothic temples. The locals even gave them their names. It is not possible to climb the peaks because of the dangerous sheer cliffs. But don't worry, the Pyramids of Melnik make a strong impression from below as well, not to mention the spectacular selfies taken in front of them.

While enjoying the natural attraction, do not forget about the artificial monument, the Rozhen Monastery, and then go to Melnik to taste the famous red wine.
