In the picturesque surroundings of Melnik, there is an ancient monastery that still attracts pilgrims from all over Bulgaria and other Christian countries. Why are Orthodox believers so interested in the Rozhen Monastery?

Founded at the end of the 9th century and named in honor of the Nativity of the Mother of God, the monastery keeps a valuable church relic, the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, which is worshipped by pilgrims. Like all ancient monuments, the Rozhen Monastery was rebuilt several times, especially during the reign of Tsar Kaloyan's nephew, despot Alexius Slav. And despite the strongest fire in the 17th century, the monastery managed to withstand and reach its peak in the middle of the 19th century. At that time, the Rozhen Monastery became a spiritual and cultural center. Today, it occupies huge areas. The size of the ancient monastery still makes an unforgettable impression. After all, the Rozhen Monastery is one of the largest Orthodox monasteries in Bulgaria.

The monastery houses many preserved buildings of different historical periods. The abbot's chambers and monastic cells date from the 15th century, as well as the gate, the observation tower, and the monastery refectory. The latter was painted with amazing frescoes in the traditional Athos style by local craftsmen in the 16th century. The hotel and warehouses appeared in the 18th century. A hundred years later, the monastery was decorated with a bell tower with large white arches and graceful wooden staircases. Thanks to the painted bell tower, the Rozhen Monastery became one of the most beautiful monasteries in Bulgaria.

The rich interior also amazes with its beauty. Along with the miraculous icon, one of the main sacred treasures is the luxurious iconostasis with fine carvings and magnificent ancient icons.

The vines in the courtyards make the Rozhen Monastery especially charming. Just like sprouts of life, these bright, juicy, green vines full of berries make their way through the gray stones of the ancient monastery.
