Nessebar is the oldest city in Europe and the pearl of Bulgaria, which captivates modern travelers in the first few minutes. Narrow winding streets paved with stone introduce tourists to the magnificent architectural monuments of the past and tell them the story of Nessebar, which is more than 3 thousand years old. The best place to start exploring the city is its historical quarter, the Old Town of Nessebar, where its history was born.

In ancient times, the Old Town on a small peninsula was surrounded by massive defensive walls. Only the Western Fortress Wall has been preserved to this day. Together with the gate and high observation towers, it is considered the main city entrance. Another outstanding attraction on the way to the Old Town is the old windmill, dating back to the Bulgarian Renaissance. The three-story wooden structure has become a real symbol of Nessebar.

From here, travelers go to the Orthodox Church of St. Stephen, dating back to the 11th century. The ancient walls of the church are adorned with more than a thousand fresco paintings. The most noticeable one depicts the scene of the Day of Judgment, painted in the 18th century. On the way to the ancient church, travelers can visit the archaeological museum, which contains all the valuable artifacts found during excavations in Nessebar at different times.

The Church of Christ Pantocrator, the Church of St. John the Baptist, the Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel... The Old Town of Nessebar is full of ancient shrines that held religious services before and host archaeological excavations today. In addition to the historical monuments, there are also many modern urban structures. However, even experienced travelers cannot always distinguish them from ancient buildings. This is because local authorities prohibit the construction of buildings that can disrupt the integral look of the Old Town, and the historic area itself has the honorary status of an architectural and archaeological reserve. Besides, the Old Town of Nessebar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
