One of the oldest cities in Europe, the Bulgarian center of Plovdiv is full of historical and cultural monuments, unique museums and galleries, as well as green flowery parks with amazing fountains. But sometimes, even the most passionate fans of antiquity get tired of wandering around the ruins and would rather be in an unusual place with a nice cheerful company. For example, in the colorful art area called Kapana. This fantastic district of the ancient city is different from other popular tourist spots.
Despite its modern appearance, Kapana is more than 5 centuries old. Today, this is evidenced by its streets named in honor of ancient crafts: "Zhelezarska" (Iron), "Zlatarska" (Gold), "Abadjiiska" (Dressmakers), "Kozhuharska" (Leather), etc. Once, the Kapana district was a famous craft center. It was inhabited by the families of blacksmiths, furriers and carpenters, jewelers, and potters, who lived here in their workshops.
Nowadays, Kapana is the cultural center of Plovdiv. Thanks to the unique urban project, which became part of the art program under the motto "Together", Plovdiv was awarded the honorary title of European Capital of Culture in 2019. Locals ofter call the district "Amsterdam" for its narrow streets and bright colorful houses. Every local building is decorated with graffiti and street art. They appear in the famous district during the annual artistic Kapana Fest, which has been held here for 5 years.
Another popular event, Street Masters Festival, gathers beatboxers and breakers, fans of alternative sports and recreation, and masters of public art in the quarter. It is always crowded and noisy, the sounds of music are everywhere. The district regularly hosts concerts and exhibitions. The cozy bars and restaurants serve the most fashionable Bulgarian dishes and cocktails, the shops of Kapana sell unusual tourist souvenirs. Moreover, it is the perfect place for the most spectacular photos.
