The main shrine of Varna, one of the largest Orthodox churches of the Bulgarian Church, the Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral, is not only a sacred place but also one of the main tourist attractions.
The magnificent monument of sacred architecture, dating back to the 19th century, rises on the main city square of Cyril and Methodius, in the very heart of the beautiful Varna, a picturesque seaside resort. Apart from its religious significance, the cathedral plays an important role in Bulgarian history. It is considered a symbol of the Bulgarian liberation from the rule of the Ottoman Empire, a symbol of the right to freedom of religion.
The construction of the church lasted six years. The monumental stone structure with a height of 48 meters and an area of more than 1,600 square meters was opened to its parishioners in 1886. But no matter how impressive the exterior of the cathedral is, nothing can compare to its luxurious interior decoration.
Both Bulgarian and Russian masters, painters and iconographers worked on the cathedral's interiors. A significant contribution to the decoration of the Orthodox shrine was made by the world-famous Bulgarian artist N. Rostovtsev. Colorful stained glass windows, original frescoes, and icons, most of which appeared in the Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral after the Second World War, are perfectly preserved to this day and make an unforgettable impression.
You can admire the beauty of the cathedral at any time. But if you want to listen to the singing of the famous Bulgarian male choir, you have to come to a festive or Sunday service. You can also come to the cathedral in the evening when the delightful modern lighting makes it especially beautiful. And then take a walk along the picturesque square, have a cup of tea or a glass of wine in one of the cozy cafes, meet friendly locals, who will tell you many stories about the ancient cathedral and the wonderful port city of Varna.
