The ancient port of Dubrovnik is one of the most visited cities in Croatia, which attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. Some come to visit ancient forts and city walls, others – to enjoy the azure Adriatic Sea and kilometers of exotic beaches. And those who want to see both, go on a fascinating trip to the picturesque mountain named Srd (Srđ). The beautiful sunny Adriatic, deserted islands and the Old Town of Dubrovnik – this is the view that opens up to tourists from a bird's-eye view or a convenient cable car that leads to the top of the mountain. By the way, this cable car is a tourist attraction itself: it is the only one on the entire Adriatic coast.
The cable car appeared in 1969 and even the tragic events of 1991 could not destroy it. Just a few years later, it was completely reconstructed. So today it still lifts everyone from the Old Town station to the green Srd. The mountain's peak is so high (more than 400 meters) that it is possible to see the mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially in clear weather.
Once upon a time, the entire mountain was covered with oak trees, that`s why it received the tender name "dubrava" (oak grove). Later, the town of Dubrovnik was named after it. Unfortunately, during the Croatian war at the end of the 20th century, most of the trees were cut or burned in numerous fires.
Today, the mountain is a natural observation deck, topped by a huge white-stone cross. There are many ways to climb Srd: by a comfortable taxi along the twisting serpentine; on foot, overcoming steep slopes of hiking trails 2 kilometers long; by cable car, enjoying the beautiful views from a breathtaking height. No matter how tourists decide to climb the mountain, they will still be surrounded by fabulous landscapes, the scent of colorful bougainvillea, and fresh brackish sea air.
