Blue Lake in Imotski

Unusual places

The small Croatian town of Imotski won fame as an ideal holiday destination thanks to its mild Mediterranean climate and about 250 sunny days a year. However, these fertile lands attract tourists neither with the warm, gentle sun, nor with the absence of cold winds, nor even with the impregnable medieval fortress. Everyone comes here to see the purest and incredibly beautiful karst lakes called Blue and Red.

Blue Lake is a freshwater reservoir near the town. Some people claim that it was formed after the collapse of a giant underground cave. Others believe that the lake occupies the crater of a small extinct volcano. Up to 100 meters deep, the unique Croatian lake can dry up completely during the hot summer months. So it is better to come in early summer or late spring when the mountain glaciers melt and flow into the turquoise waters. Surrounded by cliffs more than 200 meters high, this picturesque place is windless, and the water in the lake warms up like in a thermal spring. All of these things make the Blue Lake shore an ideal destination for a family holiday, even with the youngest travelers. Its area is about 40 hectares, but the lake is almost invisible until you drive up to specially equipped trails with viewing platforms. From there, you can see the lake at its best. It resembles a huge sapphire, lost in the middle of gray mountains with rare vegetation breaking through the rocks.

It is worth wearing comfortable shoes for a walk along the lake. Even though the territory is clean and well-groomed, the landscape is very rocky. By the way, another worthy attraction of Imotska is situated not far from this amazing reservoir. It is a fascinating park devoted to the mystical history of the medieval ballad named Hasanaginica. And if you want to enjoy the lake scenery over a cup of strong coffee and fresh traditional desserts, or maybe cool ice cream, there is a cozy cafe with outdoor seating at the entrance to its territory.
