The beautiful European city of Prague can be called a "city of historic squares". Each city block has its picturesque square with colorful old buildings. The central Old Town Square attracts modern tourists with the Town Hall building and the oldest astronomical clock on it. Local youth gather in the famous Wenceslas Square near the equestrian statue of Wenceslas to have fun. Malostranske Square, Republic Square... Indeed, there are a lot of squares in Prague. But perhaps the most unique of them is the square with the unusual name Pohorelec. It is a must-visit place for everyone. Knowing its history, no one can say how long it will delight tourists with its amazing appearance.

In the middle of the 14th century, a small surrounding settlement was founded near the old fortress on the site of the town square. A few years later, a large-scale fire broke out and destroyed all the buildings. In memory of the tragedy, it was decided to build a square on this place and name it Pohorelec. Translated from the Czech language, Pohorelec means "ashes" (this place actually rose from the ashes).

However, no one could imagine that the name of the square would have such an impact on its entire history. From the very first years of its foundation, Pohorelec was regularly burned to the ground and, like the mythical phoenix bird, was reborn from the ashes again and again... The square was first burned down during the first crusade of Emperor Sigismund in 1420. Just a couple of decades later, the square was damaged by a strong fire that engulfed the entire bank of the Vltava River. Another century later, it was set on fire during the Thirty Years' War.

After each fire, some city buildings were replaced. The magnificent Renaissance monuments were replaced with Baroque palaces, and those, in turn, with classical mansions. Of course, some buildings have been preserved and reconstructed. For example, tourists can still see the hotel with impressive stables, built in the 15th century, and the Strahov Monastery, founded in the 12th century.
