No walking tour of an ancient European city is complete without visiting the main square and the town hall. The central square of Prague is Old Town Square, and the building of the Prague Town Hall is known all over the world. It is difficult to imagine at least one traveler who has visited the Czech capital and has not seen the astronomical clock of the Old Town Hall. Besides, the Town Hall has the most popular observation deck that offers fantastic views of the Old Town. You can get to the deck using the old stairs, but the best way is to take the panoramic lift, the only lift in the historic center of Prague.
On one side, tourists see the slender towers of the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Tyn and the busy Old Town Square with dozens of cozy cafes, colorful houses with red-tiled roofs and carved facades, which have not only numbers but also names. For example, the House "At the Minute", Stone Bell House, and others. On the other side, there is a splendid view of the legendary fortress of the Early Middle Ages, Prague Castle, with the majestic St. Vitus Cathedral, the burial spot of the Czech kings.
The observation deck of the Town Hall appeared at the beginning of the 19th century. The Town Hall itself was built in the 14th century. By the way, it is still possible to register a marriage in the same way as medieval citizens did. The world-famous clock of the Old Town Hall was purchased at the beginning of the 15th century. Currently, Prague Orloj is considered the world's oldest working astronomical clock.
The three dials show modern, Old Bohemian, and Babylonian times, as well as sunrise and sunset times. The optional calendar dial says the day and month, days of the week, and Christian holidays. Every hour, the huge Prague chime strikes in a very unusual way. A skeleton figure representing death strikes the hourglass, signaling the impending apocalypse. The figure of the Turk humbly nods his head in agreement, and the figures of the twelve apostles appear from two small windows. Every hour, people gather in front of the Town Hall to enjoy this unforgettable performance of the ancient astronomical clock.
