The city of Aarhus in Denmark has many sights. One of them is the theater. Aarhus was developed and enlarged, and the theater should suit the city. The old building called Svedekassen became small and could not contain all the amateurs of this kind of art, that is why the city authorities decided to build a new theater.
They invited the famous Danish architect Hack Kampmann, the new theater was built in the Modern style. The art decoration was done by Karl Hansen-Reistrup, and the figures of Golberg on the frieze and the facade of the theater were made by Professor Hans Tegner.
The building is great, that is an architectural masterpiece. The opening of the new theater was on September 15, 1900, and now it brings joy to the citizens and travelers with its unusual and exquisite beauty.
We can say that the theater is the cultural center of Aarhus, the second-largest city in Denmark.
The internal decoration is symbolic. Under the balcony, there is the coat of arms of Aarhus, a shield with a portal and two towers, which symbolize the earliest church in the city. The waves remind that the city is located close to the sea and the river. Above the portal and spires, you can see the moon and the seven-pointed star. Inside the portal, there are the patron of the city St. Clemens and the Apostle Paul.
On the frontispiece of the theater is illustrated the scene with the characters of the Danish comedy founder Ludwig Holberg. The images of the other Danish theater classics’ works are also used in the decoration.
The gorgeous facade of the theater looks magic, this impression you will also have inside: the atmosphere of magic is created by the use of the decoration gilded elements, and various elegant chandeliers, filling the halls with the shine.
