One of the main attractions of Denmark and a visiting card of Copenhagen, the royal Christiansborg Palace, is located on the small historic island of Slotsholmen. The rulers of the Danish kingdom have chosen the 21-hectare island since ancient times. In the Middle Ages, there had been Copenhagen Сastle and its delightful Blue Tower, which were later replaced by the palace.

The construction of the palace began during the reign of Christian VI. As soon as the Danish king ascended the throne, he ordered to destroy the dilapidated walls of the ancient castle and build a new royal residence. He invited the famous architect Elias David Hausser, who spent several years building the palace. Together they created the truly magnificent Baroque building.

Unfortunately, those palace chambers burned down in a severe fire that engulfed the beautiful palace at the end of the 18th century. The king moved to another palace leaving Christiansborg to fall into disrepair. The majestic palace was saved from oblivion by King Frederick VI, who reigned in the 19th century. He began restoration work that lasted for almost half a century under the direction of the Danish architect Christian Frederik Hansen. At this time, Denmark became a parliamentary monarchy, and the palace was handed over to parliament.

However, at the end of the 19th century, the "unfortunate" palace suffered fire damage, that required more than 20 years of thorough restoration. However, the restoration revealed the ruins of the ancient Castle of Bishop Absalon. Today, all the ancient artifacts are part of the permanent exhibition located in the palace.

Just like many centuries ago, many official meetings and receptions are held in Christiansborg Palace. It houses three authority bodies: the legislative, executive, and judicial, as well as the Prime Minister's Office and the Supreme Court of the state.

Tourists can visit some of the halls, which amaze with their decoration. Huge tapestries and priceless paintings decorate the ancient walls, sculptures of monarchs and Baroque fountains adorn the exuberant garden, and the small palace chapel hosts wedding ceremonies.
