Although Copenhagen boasts many religious buildings, there are only five main must-visit churches for every tourist. The most majestic and well-preserved is the 18th-century Lutheran church.

The foundation stone of the medieval shrine was laid by King Frederick V of Denmark, who also gave it a name. Another name, "Marble Church", it received for the twelve columns that support the largest dome in Scandinavia. The construction of the church was carried out by the world-famous Danish architect Nicolai Eigtved, whose great creations still adorn Copenhagen.

The Baroque church with Rococo elements was inspired by the legendary St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Hence the marble columns, though made of Norwegian marble. The giant green dome with a diameter of 31 meters is visible from every part of the city: from both the wonderful Rosenborg Castle Gardens and the windows of Amalienborg Palace.

Unfortunately, the original Eigtved's project was never fully realized. The budget cut and the sudden death of the architect froze the construction of the church for 150 long years. And when the construction of the unique church had been resumed, the building became a third smaller, and the marble was partially replaced by local limestone. However, all these difficulties and obstacles did not prevent the church from being decorated with the rich stucco and exquisite bas-reliefs, as well as many statues of saints and twelve apostles.

The luxurious interior of Copenhagen's Marble Church also deserves particular attention. Carved wooden pews and a gilded altar play with hundreds of colors and reflections of the warm sunlight that penetrates through the tall stained-glass windows. At sunset, the sun is replaced by church candles, the flickering of which creates a unique atmosphere. Together with the enchanting ringing of the church bells, this place makes everyone feel like in a fairy tale and experience a dream of delight.
