In this museum is mainly presenting Danish contemporary art. Esbjerg Art Museum is situated in a building that perfectly matches its exposition – the impressive and modern one, attracting attention with its only facade.
Esbjerg Art Museum is more than 100 years old, it was opened in the first decade of the 20th century, in 1910, and initially was placed in the building of Esbjerg’s Public Library.
Firstly, its collection consisted of paintings of national modernists, including Harald Giersing, Edward Weie, and Vilhelm Lundstrøm. In the Giersing’s works, you will appreciate the landscapes, in Weie’s ones – the cube compositions, and the Lundstrøm’s paintings were made under the impression of Picasso’s and Cézanne’s works. In 1962 the museum got a new location – the building constructed by Jutte and Ove Tapdrup.
The museum is based in a very beautiful place – on a hill with a gorgeous view. It is interesting that close to the museum, on this very hill, is located another famous symbol of Esbjerg - water tower at the end of the 19th century. There, the museum’s collection became larger, the direction got the sculptures of a famous abstract artist Robert Jacobsen and the paintings of a surrealist-expressionist Richard Mortensen.
The museum also has the works of Asger Jorn, the founder of abstract expressionism, who made items of ceramics and wood, created woodcuts and collages. The paintings of a contemporary Danish realist Michael Quium are also worthy of attention.
And the next step: in 1997 the Museum of Fine Arts was joined with Esbjerg Concert Hall. The new building is made of glass and ceramics, looks very interesting and stylish.
The permanent collection shows the works of Danish artists from the beginning of the 20th century to the present , including the works of foreigners, influencing the Danish art. By the way, the works are mostly realistic and abstract.
