The Museum of Fine Arts is based in the beautiful Lunden Park, almost in the heart of this interesting city. This amazing place was opened in 1906, and the main focus of the museum is modern art. While visiting the museum, you can notice that the works of the painter Michael Kvium are rather precious there. This is not surprising: he is not just the most popular painter in Denmark today but also a native of Horsens.

Nowadays the museum keeps the biggest collection of Michael Kvium’s works in the country, which includes paintings, graphics, and sculptures, created in 1985-2014 years. So, this large collection gives an opportunity to trace the artistic development of Michael Kvium from the 1890s to the present times. 

The park Lunden also has his own history, it was opened in the middle of the 19th century. At the beginning of the establishment, it was located in a small building of a city technical school, but already in 1915, it was transported to another location – a new modern space, constructed for its purposes. It was possible because the famous pilot Theodore Lowenstein became a patron of the museum and was donating money for the building of a museum’s “house”. 

Now, this elegant building is functioning as a museum of city history. Initially, the Horsens museum had two thematic exhibitions, but later, in 1984, they were divided into the museum of city history and the museum of fine arts.

Now, the Museum of Fine Arts is located in a beautiful building of the 19th century, completely reconstructed at the end of the 20th – the beginning of the 21st century. Now the museum is in a bright 2-floors building with spacious rooms and a nice balcony. 

When the museum was under construction, its main idea was to support the interest to the art and the historic buildings. This goal was completely achieved. 

For its long 100-years history, the museum had a lot of work. The archeologists took part in the local excavations, and in the search of the last place on the Bering island in Russia, where Vitus Bering had been.

The museum also had various exhibitions, and now the collection consists of more than 25000 items, as well as thousands of geographical findings.
