Egeskov Castle is a miraculous and fairy place on the island of Funen in Denmark. It seems that this castle comes out of water. And looking to its round towers and high spires, you have the impression that it is a place where a knight rushes to save his princess and kill an evil dragon. Fortunately, there are no dragons, but there are the gardens. Gorgeous and romantic…
But all the light and dreamlike impression is misleading. The castle was built in 1554 in the middle of the lake on the solid wooden piles. A closer look at the design will show that the castle is a building made for defense. It consists of two separate constructions, connected with a narrow pass, which increased the chances of the owners for the rescue.
For its long history, the castle was the propriety of different families, and, fortunately, the history of this building was peaceful. In 1784 Egeskov Castle was bought by Henrik Bille and still belongs to his heirs. They opened the castle for tourists in 1886.
The castle has many museums: of retro cars, flying vehicles, agricultural machinery. There you can also see the decoration items, sculptures, paintings, Japanese porcelain, Danish furniture, hunting trophies. Some of the castle’s rooms are made in the styles of Renaissance, Ludovico 14th and Victorian Epoque.
In the castle, you can walk through the gorgeous park with peacocks. And, of course, to see the gardens: there bloom and scent roses and fuchsias, and are replaced the thematic gardens: White, Blue, English, Renaissance.
