Helsinki has many museums and galleries: the modern and traditional, the chamber and spacious, and the open-air ones. The Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art is different from all Finnish fine art museums because of not only its unique architectural design but also its completely new and unique exhibitions. These exhibitions literally invite visitors to rethink art and have a heated discussion.
The history of the Kiasma Museum began long before its grand opening in 1998. It took more than 40 years to create and complete the project. But it was undoubtedly worth the effort. Today Kiasma is one of the most visited museums in the country. Its collections contain 4 thousand exhibits: paintings, photos, and video installations that are authentic works of contemporary art.
The 13,000-square-meter building is divided into 25 galleries, each of which is dedicated to its own art. Moreover, visitors can not only enjoy the visual art but also listen to the works of great musicians. There is a spacious music hall in the center of Kiasma. The first three floors are occupied by permanent exhibitions, and the 4th and 5th floors host temporary exhibitions that are updated every season.
The location of the museum is convenient. It stands in the heart of the capital, the picturesque Mannerheiminaukio Square. Besides, it is very easy to find such a magnificent monument of modern architecture. This huge, oddly-shaped, and mirrored structure can be seen from afar, especially in clear weather, when it shimmers with multi-colored sun glints. There is also another tourist landmark: a bronze equestrian statue of Marshal Mannerheim stands right in front of the museum. The creation of the Finnish sculptor Aimo Tukiainen is more than 4 meters high.
