Although only 6% of the population of modern Finland recognized themselves as atheists, and all the rest belong to other religious denominations, this amazing country can be called one of the most loyal in terms of religion. In Finland, it is officially allowed to establish any religious communities or even declare oneself out of religion. Local religious buildings host not only church services but also musical concerts, as well as unique metal masses to the sounds of heavy rock. There are still classical Christian churches in the vicinage, but the Finnish capital, Helsinki, is being increasingly built up with monuments of modern sacred architecture, like the world-famous Temppeliaukio Church with a natural interior that is carved into the rock, or the wooden Chapel of Silence, which is more an artwork than a religious shrine.

Unlike the rocky Temppeliaukio Church, the Kamppi Chapel of Silence does not hold church rituals, baptismal and funeral services, as well as wedding ceremonies. The unique architectural project was timed to coincide with the important international event of 2012 "Helsinki, the World Design Capital". The chapel on Narinkka Square was built by this time.

Three talented architects – Mikko Summanen, Niko Sirola, and Kimmo Lintula – won the prestigious competition back in 2008. Preparations for the construction lasted three long years, but the city chapel was built in just one year. The unusual bizarrely-shaped chapel 11.5 meters high is made of several tree species at once. The solid wooden framing is sheathed with bent spruce slats, treated with special wax using nanotechnology.

The interior of the chapel is no less interesting. The walls and ceiling are covered with black alder planks and all the furniture is made from local Finnish ash. Since the very first day of its opening, the Kamppi Chapel of Silence has been visited by tens of thousands of people, both believers and those who need support and psychological help. Thus, the Finnish chapel has not only religious but also important social significance.
