Although there are many adult recreational and entertainment destinations in the world, the tourism industry pays little attention to young travelers. Children had enjoyed only special theme and water parks until unique children's museums began to open all over the world. The amusing museum collections help parents inculcate in their kids a love for genuine art.
Museums of tinker toys, dolls, and fairy-tale characters can be found almost everywhere, but only the city of Tampere can boast the unique Moomin Museum. Today, this museum is like the whole universe of the Moomins. But it all began in the 1970s with the construction of one five-story Moominhouse only 2.5 m high. The residents of Finland liked the project of the Finnish architect Reima Pietila so much that it didn’t take long to send it on tour to all the Scandinavian cities. After the international tour, the Moominhouse was returned to its homeland, to the studio of the writer Tove Jansson (the created of these mysterious characters).
After a short restoration, the fairy-tale house became the hallmark of the entire Moomin Museum, founded in 1987. In addition to the Moominhouse, you can see the writer's original illustrations, miniatures by Pentti Eistola, and 3D figures by the graphic artist Tuulikki Pietila. In total, this fascinating children's museum consists of more than 2 thousand exhibits, including interactive ones. Visitors are especially passionate about the "wizard's hat", as both children and adults can get into it.
It didn't take long before the collection of little Moomins, as well as their popularity, had increased so much that a larger building was needed. Therefore, in 2017, the museum moved from the small basement of the Metso Library to the luxurious halls of the Tampere Hall. Today, it is annually visited by tens of thousands of tourists from all over the world. Besides, there is a colorful Moomin gift shop and a cozy Moomin restaurant.
