Once in October 1969 Walter Ulbricht, the first secretary of SED, looked out the window and saw Television Tower, which had been installed several days ago in the city center. He was speechless. On the highest point of Berlin – the symbol of scientific, industrial and political power – the sun was reflected in the form of a cross.
How could the symbol of the socialist atheistic state show the religious attribute? Ulbricht was assured: architects and engineers building the tower knew of it and turned the socialism ideas into a joke. Hopefully, the main engineer was not punished, because somebody from the government suggested that that was not the cross, but a “plus” to socialism.
Through hearsay, the main function of a tower was to spy on the Western Berlin from the highest point of the Eastern one. It has no evidence, but it is easy to believe in it.
Nowadays Berliner Fernsehturm is one of the city symbols. On the lower floors, there is an exhibition area and the restaurant with a viewpoint on the top of the tower. In autumn, during the Festival of Lights, Television Tower is one of the interesting art-objects.
