The castle of Karababa or Castle of Chalkis is placed in the center of Chalkis. First of all, the castle functioned as a fortress, because that region was very fertile and rich in copper, which attracted the conquerors. Also, the island of Euboea, where Chalkis was situated, was a place of 2 seas merging, what in ancient time was a solid reason for the siege of this territory. 

The castle had the most fortified bastion on the eastern side, where soldiers could control the strait. Now it is destroyed, but you can notice in the ruins two Russian cannons, which have been remained there since the 19th century.

The highest building of the castle was a large 7-angled tower in the western part of a fort. People could enter the tower only through a narrow-arched corridor, looking like a labyrinth than an entrance. But this system helped the Greeks many times during the military conflicts. Inside the tower, Greeks were keeping containers with water, so the soldiers did not die from thirst during the siege of a fortress. 

The long history of the fortress affected its condition, it is in a very sad state. Nevertheless, you can take beautiful pictures on the background of the strait and walls, made of white bricks.

Inside the bastion, you can visit a historic exhibition telling about fortress history and all the attacks. There are many historical artifacts of the 2nd century BC. So, you can see ancient tableware, household items, and tools. Not all of them you can define because of a bad condition, but, some of them are well preserved… like an ancient knife or ax, or a plate… So, you should definitely visit the exhibition, where else can you see such ancient items?
